Electrify Now UK V2.gif

We are a movement of British think tanks and civil society organisations united by a mission: to accelerate the UK’s uptake of electric heating, transport and power generation, moving the country towards a cleaner, greener, brighter, more prosperous future.

The movement supports the global Electrify Now campaign, which has a mission to accelerate the rate of electrification everywhere.

WHY ELECTRIFY?

The UK's energy future is electric. Electrification means switching petrol, diesel and gas powered devices for electric alternatives powered by clean, green, British electrons. Doing so means that driving and heating costs plummet, our air gets cleaner, our climate impact reduces and, as a nation, we are not reliant on volatile foreign energy anymore.

More than a quarter of a million homes now have a heat pump

2M

More than 2 million homes have solar panels installed UK-wide

25%

A quarter of all new cars sold so far in 2026 are fully electric

50%

Renewables provided over half of the nation's power in 2025

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY 'ELECTRIFICATION'?

1

Expanding access to electricity supply to meet a greater share of humanity’s energy needs

2

Replacing technologies and processes that depend on fossil fuels – principally oil and gas – with those powered by electricity

4X FASTER

To build a resilient energy system, we must more than quadruple the current rate of electrification, moving from around 21% of final energy consumption today to 35% by 2035.

This might not sound like a big change, but because of the efficiency of using electricity, this will make giant strides to move away from fossil fuels in our energy system.

And the sooner we move, the faster we can enjoy the benefits of home-grown, affordable and secure renewable electricity.

DELIVERING OUR ELECTRIC FUTURE

The UK is already electrifying its economy. But far too slowly.

And this glacial speed is causing problems we are all feeling: the cost of living crisis, our reliance on foreign energy, even the air we breathe will all be made better by going faster on electrifying the economy.

To grab the huge opportunities electrification will bring, we need to go faster.

“The world has entered the Age of Electricity.”

Fatih Birol

Executive Director, International Energy Agency

“We are at the dawn of a new and clean energy era. An era where cheap, abundant, renewable energy powers a world rich in economic possibilities.”

António Guterres

Secretary-General, United Nations

“It's time for us to think about electrifying everything.”

Sharon S. Garin

Secretary of Energy, Philippines

“Countries that have invested substantially in solar, wind, batteries, and electrification are weathering the present disruption with measurably less economic damage.”

Francesco La Camera

Director-General, International Renewable Energy Agency

“Every additional investment in renewables, electrified transport, buildings and industry is an investment in security.”

Bruce Douglas

CEO, Global Renewables Alliance

“At present, electricity accounts for roughly 20 percent of final energy consumption. We must aim to raise that share as much as we possibly can. As we do so… we must ensure that no one is left behind.”

Murat Kurum

COP31 President-Designate and Minister of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change, Türkiye

“Higher oil prices are putting pressure on all our citizens from Suva to Sydney to Stockholm. No one can sanction the Sun, no one can blockade the wind.”

Chris Bowen

Australian Climate Change & Energy Minister and COP31 President of Negotiations

“Electricity is becoming the operating system of the global economy. For businesses, clean electrification increasingly means less risk linked to fossil fuel volatility, lower costs and greater resilience.”

Maria Mendiluce

CEO, We Mean Business Coalition

“WE ARE AT THE DAWN OF A NEW AND CLEAN ENERGY ERA. AN ERA WHERE CHEAP, ABUNDANT, RENEWABLE ENERGY POWERS A WORLD RICH IN ECONOMIC POSSIBILITIES.”

Antonio Guterres

Secretary-General, United Nations

“ELECTRIFY EVERYTHING, AS MUCH AS YOU CAN, ELECTRIFY EVERYTHING.”

Fatih Birol

Executive Director, International Energy Agency

“COUNTRIES THAT HAVE INVESTED SUBSTANTIALLY IN SOLAR, WIND, BATTERIES, AND ELECTRIFICATION ARE WEATHERING THE PRESENT DISRUPTION WITH MEASURABLY LESS ECONOMIC DAMAGE.”

Francesco La Camera

Director-General, International Renewable Energy Agency

“IT'S TIME FOR US TO THINK ABOUT ELECTRIFYING EVERYTHING.”

Sharon S. Garin

Secretary of Energy, Philippines

“AT PRESENT, ELECTRICITY ACCOUNTS FOR ROUGHLY 20 PERCENT OF FINAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION. WE MUST AIM TO RAISE THAT SHARE AS MUCH AS WE POSSIBLY CAN. AS WE DO SO…WE MUST ENSURE THAT NO ONE IS LEFT BEHIND.”

Murat Kurum

COP31 President-Designate and Minister of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change, Türkiye

“EVERY ADDITIONAL INVESTMENT IN RENEWABLES, ELECTRIFIED TRANSPORT, BUILDINGS AND INDUSTRY IS AN INVESTMENT IN SECURITY."

Bruce Douglas

CEO, Global Renewables Alliance

“ELECTRICITY IS BECOMING THE OPERATING SYSTEM OF THE GLOBAL ECONOMY. FOR BUSINESSES, CLEAN ELECTRIFICATION INCREASINGLY MEANS LESS RISK LINKED TO FOSSIL FUEL VOLATILITY, LOWER COSTS AND GREATER RESILIENCE.”

Maria Mendiluce

CEO, We Mean Business Coalition

“HIGHER OIL PRICES ARE PUTTING PRESSURE ON ALL OUR CITIZENS FROM SUVA TO SYDNEY TO STOCKHOLM. NO ONE CAN SANCTION THE SUN, NO ONE CAN BLOCKADE THE WIND."

Chris Bowen

Australian Climate Change & Energy Minister and COP31 President of Negotiations

“Electrify everything, as much as you can, electrify everything.”
